American Skeet is shot on a field made up of eight different shooting positions. The targets are thrown from a high house on the left (from the front of the field) and a low house on the right. Single and true pairs of targets are shot in a predetermined order from each station.
Supply requirements:
- Each field requires two trap machines.
- Standard 108mm skeet clay targets are used.
- Separate events are normally offered for 12 gauge, 20 gauge, 28 gauge, .410 bore, and doubles.
- Shooters may use a gauge smaller than the event allows. For example, it is permissible to use a 20 gauge in a 12 gauge event.
- A standard round of skeet consists of 25 targets and should take about 20 minutes to sheet, with a total of 100 targets throughout four rounds.
Staff requirements:
- One person (called a “trapper”) to throw and score the targets. (link to video of “how to be a trapper?)
- Or in many cases, the shooters pull targets for their group and switch off so that no trapper is needed.
- Voice release units are also available for solo shooters.
